Artist statement
I have long had a special fondness for Figurative art. I find that there is something inherently engaging and connective about artwork that includes the human form. And when I started working with a live model myself, I have found it to be a deeply meditative and rewarding practice, which is why it has become such an integral part of my art.
Whether working in sculpture or drawing, I enjoy looking for, highlighting, or exaggerating, the gesture, movement, and facial expressions of my subjects, to help encourage an experience for the people who view my art. Throughout my artistic choices while depicting the fascinating visual aspects of the human form, I enjoy thinking about the phycological aspects of being human.
Artist Biography
Melissa Kennedy is a visual artist and art instructor that lives and works in New Brunswick, Canada. Her career as an artist began after graduating from the Florence Academy of Art, where she learned traditional methods of figurative sculpture and drawing.
Melissa has always found working from life to be an engaging and rewarding part of her art practice. She enjoys drawing and sculpting from a model in both artist group sessions as well as at her home studio with the supervision of her cat Merlin (whom she considers to be the most adorable but also most unhelpful studio assistant ever).
She has participated in many local opportunities such as residencies in both Fredericton and Campobello Island, and her work has been included in exhibitions both locally, and internationally in cities such as London and Barcelona.
