ARTIST STATEMENT
Having enjoyed a variety of photographic genres macro photography is the one that has totally captivated me. This passion for seeing small things up close is articulated by F.B. Meyer’s quote “There are as many worlds of wonder which are too minute for our vision as there are too great for our understanding.” I love the challenge of exploring and photographing “near space” then creating art that shares and celebrates it. OysterArtTM is my collection of photographic abstracts discovered in tiny areas of an oyster shell. They invite you into a miniature world you may otherwise never have the opportunity to explore. When the image is able to spark the viewer’s curiosity and imagination—then—I can hardly wait to discover nature’s next miniature painting.
Photography energizes me with its infinite number of possibilities and technical challenges. I don’t foresee an end to the exciting stories I can capture in all their glorious detail!
DESCRIPTION OF OYSTER ART
Oyster ArtTM is an evolving collection of complex macro-photographic images created by stacking multiple photos of small sections of oyster shells gathered from around the world. Their timeless depth and beauty will enrich any space with an incredible story. The collection is currently available printed on three mediums (archival paper, canvas or acrylic) in a variety of sizes, and three editions: Open, Limited and Pearl. The colour, shape and texture of an oyster shell is determined by the species and growing environment. No two oyster shells are alike, providing endless possibilities to inspire my work. Only a small percentage of shells prove to be “photogenic” enough to create an Oyster Art image. In addition to celebrating nature’s miniature masterpieces, Oyster Art also emphasizes the importance of the aquaculture industry and the positive economic and environmental impact of oysters.
