SAINT JOHN – The Saint John Arts Centre is pleased to be hosting renowned artist Paul
Mathieson’s retrospective exhibition and book launch on September 4th. Titled The Narrative
Paintings of Paul Mathieson: A 40-Year Retrospective, this exhibition will feature works
borrowed from multiple collections from throughout Mathieson’s career.
The book, Notes For An Artist: The Narrative Paintings of Paul Mathieson, examines the
creative output of the New Brunswick artist and includes over 50 illustrated works with
commentary documenting his artistic evolution over four decades. It highlights Mathieson’s
observational approach as he has created a body of narrative paintings that serve as acute
commentaries on his world both public and private.
The author, Peter Buckland, Mathieson’s representative and advocate through much of his career,
spent hours in conversation with the artist during the past two years.
“It has been a pleasure to present the work of Paul Mathieson in book format, something that is
long overdue and well deserved for this important New Brunswick artist,” says Buckland.
Mathieson’s work is part of numerous important collections, including the New Brunswick Art
Bank, the New Brunswick Museum, the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, and the University of New
Brunswick, and more. In 2015, he received the prestigious Strathbutler Award, one of New
Brunswick’s top honours for artists.
Together with Peter Buckland’s publication, the retrospective offers a rare opportunity to reflect
on the depth and enduring relevance of Mathieson’s career.
