Feminist Collage (June. 2026)
In this one-day workshop, artist Caitlin Lapeña will present a lecture on the history of feminist collage and guide participants in creating an 11” x 17” mixed media collage inspired by feminist and their own personal histories. Participants will learn about the social and historical contexts that shaped feminist collage, along with various approaches to collage and mixed media. The workshop will also cover composition techniques and strategies for building visual narratives. A wide range of materials will be used, including magazine and book clippings, fabric scraps, pens, pencils, acrylic paint, and more. All materials are provided, and no prior art experience is necessary. Participants are also welcome to bring personal items, such as magazines, books, or photographs to incorporate into their work. This course is suitable for beginner to intermediate artists.

Caitlin Lapeña
Caitlin Lapeña is a visual artist based in Saint John, New Brunswick. She holds a BFA from Queen’s University (Kingston, ON). Her multidisciplinary practice includes drawing, printmaking, and collage, with a particular interest in researching historically underrepresented feminist artists. Recently, she delivered a lecture on feminist collage practices for a Gender Studies course at UNBSJ.
Lapeña’s work has been exhibited in Canada and the United States, including exhibitions at 13 Cedars (Rowley, NB), Peanuts Gallery (Vancouver, BC), Paradice Palase (Brooklyn, NY), Weird Things (Toronto, ON), and Hamilton Artists’ Inc. (Hamilton, ON). Her work has also been featured in publications such as Visual Arts News (Halifax, NS), Peripheral Review (Vancouver, BC), Bed Zine (Vancouver, BC), and Free Spirit News (Portland, OR). She has been the recipient of ArtsNB Creation Grants in 2022, 2024, and 2025.
